US governor gets 14 years in jail for corruption

Former Illinois governor, Rod Blagojevich has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for political corruption. He had tried to sell the Senate seat vacated by the then president-elect Barack Obama.

With his wife beside him Blagojevich said after sentencing: “This is a time to fight through adversity, this is a time for me to be strong for my children, to be strong for Pattie and this is also a time for Pattie and me to get home so we can explain to our kids, our babies Amy and Annie, what happened and what all this means and where we are going from here.”

State governors normally just nominate a replacement for when a senator leaves to become president. Blagojevich was ousted from office in 2009 when the Obama scam came to light. Although he apologised for his actions he has never admitted his guilt.
