Italian side Napoli reached the knockout stages of the Champions League with a convincing 2-0 away win over bottom side Villareal while Manchester City crashed out despite beating Bayern Munich by the same scoreline.
In group B, CSKA Moscow needed a late goal from Vasily Berezutski to progress to the last 16 while Lille were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Trabzonspor at the Stadium Lille Metropole.
In group C, Manchester United were dumped out of the competition by FC Basel while Benfica clinched top spot with a narrow 1-0 win over Otelul Galati at the Estadio da Luz.
And in group D, Lyon stunned Dynamo Zagreb 7-1 to reach the knockout stages while Ajax failed to qualify after losing 3-0 to Real Madrid at the Amsterdam Arena.
