Suspicions of match mixing during Wednesday night’s Champions League have been raised by Spanish media following Lyon’s 7-1 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb.
Spanish media have printed a photo from television footage showing Dinamo defender Domagoj Vida appearing to wink and gesture a ‘thumbs up’ to Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis after one of the striker’s four goals on the night.
Lyon, who had only scored twice in their previous five Champions League games, hit the back of the net seven times in 30 minutes to upset the odds and leapfrog Ajax, who lost 3-0 Real Madrid, in Group D and reach the knockout stages.
UEFA later issued a statement playing down talk of irregular betting patterns insisting nothing untoward had been detected from Wednesday’s Group D fixtures.
Dinamo were quick to deny any wrongdoing on their part while unlucky losers Ajax are set to request an official investigation into the matter.
