In a dramatic raid Chinese authorities have arrested over six hundred people suspected of selling children.

They also managed to rescue and free 178 children in what authorities called “one of the biggest victories for anti-trafficking.”

Chen Shiqu from the ministry of public security hoped the action would cut the number of such crimes: “Those who have paid for these children must be punished by losing both the child and the money, so that the market shrinks gradually, and reduces the number of cases,” he said.

The trafficking of children is a huge problem in China, as population control policies have created a bias for male offspring, although girls are also trafficked as they may one day attract rich dowries.
