Britain’s government has threatened serious consequences for Iran after protesters stormed the British embassy in Tehran and other diplomatic residences.
Diplomats viewing footage of the mob entering the embassy grounds said it was clear from the clothing and placards that the incident was organised and a significant number were members of the regime’s volunteer paramilitary.
William Hague British Foreign Secretary said after an emergency meeting with the prime minister: “Clearly there will be other, further and serious consequences. We hold the Iranian government responsible for its failure to take adequate measures to protect our embassy as it is required to do.”
Despite the destruction none of the embassy staff was hurt. International reaction to the incident has been swift with the US, France and the UN condemning the embassy raid.
Ties have recently soured between London and Tehran. Britain has applied sanctions over Iran’s alleged attempts to build a nuclear bomb while Iran has threatened to expel Britain’s ambassador within the next two weeks.
