Iranian protesters have stormed the British embassy in Tehran.
Windows have been smashed and the British flag burnt, replaced with the Iranian flag.
Some reports say petrol bombs were thrown and documents from the embassy were burnt.
One semi-official news agency, Mehr, reported that half a dozen embassy workers had been taken hostage, but then withdrew the report from its website with no explanation.
An office of the British Council in a different part of the capital was also reportedly stormed.
The UK government says it is “outraged” by the action and has called on Iran to protect diplomatic missions and their staff, as required under international law.
The demonstrators gathered to protest against sanctions imposed by Britain last week over Iran’s nuclear programme.
The Iranian parliament has agreed to reduce ties with Britain.
