There have been calls for greater supervision of families considered “at-risk” in France.

It comes in the wake of a case near Paris, where a father has been accused of killing his three-year-old son by putting him in a washing machine and switching it on – apparently as a punishment for being naughty at school.

Both parents, who reportedly claim the boy fell down the stairs, are in custody.

The family were said to have been monitored by social services.
