Breivik declared “insane” by psychiatrists

Court-appointed psychiatrists have concluded that Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in July, is criminally insane.

Breivik, who has admitted carrying out attacks in Oslo and on Utoeya island, is said to have developed paranoid schizophrenia over a long period of time.

Prosecutors added that the psychiatric evaluation may mean that he will not be sent to prison.

Breivik was described as living in a “delusional universe,” governing his thoughts and acts.

If the conclusions are upheld, Breivik could be detained in a psychiatric unit instead.

He has admitted carrying out the attacks, but has pleaded not guilty to charges.
