American Airlines files for bankruptcy

American Airlines and its parent company AMR Corp have filed for bankruptcy after failing to strike a deal with pilots over labour costs.

The company has had the highest running costs in the US air travel industry after its rivals had successfully managed to reduce theirs through bankruptcy. It was the only major airline still funding workers’ pensions.

AMR says it expects to keep flying during bankruptcy proceedings.
