French jobless rate on the rise

The number of people out of work in France hit its highest level in nearly 12 years in October.

Government figures showed the number of jobseekers went up by 34,000 to 2.81 million – that is up nearly 5 per cent year on year.

France has not seen unemployment levels like that since December 1999. It could prove a headache for President Nicholas Sarkozy, who is trailing in the polls and faces an election in five months.
