There were violent scenes in provincial Egypt overnight as calls for an end to military rule multiply.

Protesters clashed with police in the second city of Alexandria.

And, inspired by the thousands in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, demonstrators also took to the streets of the northeastern city of Ismailia, on the Suez Canal.

There, dozens of people were arrested as military police moved in to disperse the crowds.
