A group of Amish men have been arrested over a spate of attacks in which other members of the reclusive US Christian cult had their hair and beards cut off. The assaults are said to be linked to a long-running feud between the suspects and their alleged victims.
The men were arrested during an early morning raid by police and the FBI on their compound in rural Ohio. The local sheriff said Amish communities all over the area had been living in fear of attack.
Prosecutors say the group was led by an elder who sought to excommunicate those who did not abide by his own strict interpretation of Amish laws.
Hair-cutting is a highly offensive act to followers of the sect, who believe women should let their hair grow and that men should not shave once they are married.
