New York police arrest terror suspect

Police in New York have announced they have successfully foiled a bomb plot and have arrested a man on three terrorist related charges.

The suspect, 27-year-old American Jose Pimentel is said to have been under police surveillance since 2009.

In a press conference the city’s Mayor, Michael Bloomberg claimed the suspect had been acting alone but had several targets.

“ Yesterday afternoon New York city police officers arrested a 27-year-old al Qaeda sympathiser who was plotting to bomb police patrol cars and also postal facilities as well as targeted members of our armed forces returning from abroad,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

Experts claim the bomb could have killed and maimed if it had gone off. It is alleged Pimentel learnt how to build the device from the al Qaeda published magazine “Inspire”.

District Attorney Cyrus Vance added: “ Our office today filed charges against Jose Pimentel of Manhattan for conspiring to build a bomb for terrorist purposes and for possessing a weapon – a pipe bomb, that he is alleged to have intended to use to wage his campaign of violence.”
