Saif al-Islam, Colonel Gaddafi’s fugitive son, has been arrested in southern Libya.
The late leader’s heir apparent had been on the run since August.
A first photograph of him in custody shows the 39-year-old suffering a hand injury. He is otherwise said to be in good health.
Saif al-Islam was captured near the town of Obari and has been transferred to Zintan in the north of the country, according to officials.
Libya’s interim government says he was fleeing to neighbouring Niger when former rebels detained him along with several aides.
The International Criminal Court says it has
confirmation from Libyan authorities of Saif al-Islam’s arrest. It wants to try him for alleged crimes against humanity.
Today’s news sparked celebratory scenes in the capital, Tripoli. It comes almost exactly a month after Saif al-Islam’s father, Muammar Gaddafi, was killed during his capture by former rebel fighters.
