The financial crisis in Europe appears to have taken a nasty new twist with the rate of borrowing for even the euro zone’s core countries rising sharply. Elsewhere, the Greek government pushed through more austerity measures and Italy’s Mario Monti took over as prime minister. Further a field, EU foreign ministers agreed to tighten sanctions against Syria and Iran.
