Loeb wins eighth world title

Despite crashing on the final day of the Wales Rally GB, Sebastien Loeb’s victory on Friday made him the world’s most successful motorsport driver, ahead of Formula One’s Michael Schumacher and MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi.

Having already gifted Citroen its seventh manufacturers’ world title in the penultimate round, the 37 year old clinched a record 8th consecutive World Rally Championship title after a submerged branch destroyed the hopes of closest rival Mikko Hirvonen on the second stage.

Although Finland’s Mikko Hirvonen is rumoured to be driving for Citroen next year, Loeb, who recently told journalists that he had no desire to race in Formula One at any stage, suggested his rallying career was far from over.
