Deadly blast at Iranian military base

world news

| |

A massive explosion at an Iranian military base has left 27 people dead and at least 16 others wounded, some critically.

It is believed the victims are all members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.

The blast occurred as weapons were being moved at the depot just outside the capital Tehran. Windows in nearby buildings were shattered and the sound of the explosion was heard 25 kilometres away.

Authorities say there are no suspicious circumstances over the cause which they have described as “accidental.”

There have been occasional unexplained explosions in Iran before. In October last year, 18 people were killed in a blast at a Revolutionary Guards base in the north-western Lorestan province.
