The Arab League says it will suspend Syria as from November 16 until a peace plan is implemented.
The regional body also announced political and economic sanctions against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime during an emergency meeting in Cairo.
Members were under pressure from protesters outside the meeting.
They wanted to shame the League into action over Syria. An estimated 3,500 people have been killed in Assad’s continuing crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.
The League, which wants a meeting with Syrian opposition leaders, says Assad’s failed to respect a peace deal he signed with them 10 days ago.
