A US army sergeant, Calvin Gibbs, faces a maximum life sentence, after being convicted by court-martial of murdering unarmed civilians and cutting fingers off their corpses while ringleader of a rogue platoon in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon says the case has damaged the reputation of US forces around the globe.
