Serb man shot dead in Mitrovica

Three Serbs were shot during a clash last night in the divided Kosovan city of Mitrovica. One of the victims, Sava Mojsic, was killed. Doctors say he was shot twice in the back.

The clash took place in an area of the city shared by Serbs and ethnic Albanians.

Tensions have been simmering since July when Kosovan police tried to establish control of two border checkpoints in the mainly Serb north, which rejects Kosovos’s 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia.

“I don’t know who fired, but I’m convinced they were Albanians. Whether or not they were members of the Kosovo Special Police or ordinary Albanians I’m not sure, but they are terrorists. These people shouldn’t be on the street, they should be caged, or in jail,” said an eyewitness.

A spokesman for the Kosovo police says the shots were fired after a police patrol intervened to stop a fight between Serbs and Albanians. One of the men shot was a member of the police himself.
