An 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck 16 kilometres south of the Turkish city of Van on Wednesday.

The Reuters news agency reported that 18 buildings have collapsed but as yet there is no news on the number of casualties.

State television showed residents and rescuers trying to lift debris to evacuate people believed to be trapped under a hotel in Van.

The city was hit by a 7.1-magnitude tremor two weeks ago that claimed 600 lives.
