After his meeting with the president, Greek prime minister George Papandreou made a passionate speech about the need for a national unity government – but no announcement on who would be the next prime minister.

The decision is expected to be made today, and could be revealed by the president himself.

During the speech Papandreou reaffirmed the country’s commitment to staying in the eurozone and stressed the importance of the new bailout deal agreed in Brussels at the end of October.

He also said consensus was more important that party politics and that is why he was happy to resign.
