Veteran American surfer Kelly Slater clinched the world title on Sunday after reaching the quarter finals of the latest event in San Francisco.

In tricky conditions, the 39-year-old was made to battle hard but eventually kept his composure to post outstanding wave scores of 9.1 and 8.7, edging out Brazil’s Miguel Pupo and Gabriel Medina.

Slater, who was prematurely crowned champion because of a calculation error by the Association of Surfing Professionals last week, is the first surfer to claim 11 ASP World Titles.
