A former military commander of the Basque separatist group ETA has been sentenced to 105 years in prison for an assassination.
Javier Garcia Gaztelu, known as Txapote, was arrested in France ten years ago, before being transferred to Spain to face justice.
Txapote has been found guilty of a car bombing that killed Basque regional politician Fernando Buesa and his bodyguard in February 2000. Two other people were wounded in the attack.
It is the first sentence against a member of ETA since the separatist group, considered terrorists by the Spanish government and the EU, announced an end to their violent campaign last month.
After decades of conflict which left more than 800 people dead, ETA is now calling for dialogue with the governments of Spain and France. However, they are yet to receive a formal response from either.
