Slater rides the waves to a new record

Kelly Slater – the king of surf – has been crowned World Champion for an unprecedented eleventh time at the age of 39.

Aficionados of the sport are running out of superlatives to describe his achievements on the waves of the oceans of the world.

His first title was in 1992; there were five consecutive ones between 1994 and 1998. He is the youngest at 20 years of age and the oldest now at 39 to win the World Championship.

“The tenth was much commented on,” he remarked after his latest victory. “Everyone wanted to know what it was like to win ten. It was much more difficult not to think about. Once I had won, it allowed me to be less stressed this year and enjoy the competition with less distraction.”

The Florida born surfer sealed his latest victory on the waves of San Francisco and like the majority of his other 10 titles, his lead was so great that he was crowned World Champion with a round of the series still to be held.
