Salvage teams off New Zealand are preparing for the worst amid fears a cargo ship grounded on a reef for nearly a month could break up in bad weather, leaking more of its load of oil.

The Liberian-flagged Rena has already spilled around 350 tonnes of thick, toxic fuel and dozens of containers into the sea.
