In extraordinary scenes on the streets of Sarajevo, a suspected Islamist gunman opened fire on the US embassy before being shot and wounded by police.
The man was hit by a police sniper after a 30-minute stand-off in Bosnia’s capital. His injuries are not said to be life threatening.
“It remains to be seen if this was the act of an individual or something organised,” said Zeljko Komsic, the Chairman of Bosnia’s tripartite presidency. “We have to wait and see what our security services say about it. Whatever it was, it was not just an attack on the US embassy or the US. It was also an attack on Bosnia-Herzegovina.”
A police officer was hurt in the shooting which Bosnian television blamed on a 23-year-old radical Islamist from neighbouring Serbia.
The Muslim Bosniak member of Bosnia’s presidency,
Bakir Izetbegovic, has condemned the attack on the embassy as an act of terrorism.
