Marco Simoncelli laid to rest

Thousands of people gathered in Coriano to pay their respects to MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli who died over the weekend in a crash during a race in Sepang.

The 24 year old’s funeral was held at the church of Santa Maria Assunta and access was restricted to family members, members of Team Gresini, and various special guests such as Marco Melandri, Loris Capirossi, Hiroshi Ayoma and seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi who was also involved in the fatal crash in Malaysia.

Simoncelli, who clinched the 250cc championship in 2008 was a rising star in the sport and was tipped by many as a potential future MotoGP world champion.

The Italian’s death was the first fatality in MotoGP since Japan’s Daijiro Katoh died from injuries sustained at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix.
