Libya’s new administration has confirmed that the body of the former dictator Muammar Gaddafi has been buried overnight at an undisclosed location.
Officials from the National Transitional Council had earlier said Gaddafi’s remains would be interred in a secret desert grave to prevent it from becoming a shrine for his followers in the future.
There have been days of negotiations with local leaders about where the body could be buried.
The doors of the cold store, where Gaddafi’s body had been on public display, were ordered to be closed yesterday.
Many Libyans had travelled long distances to see for themselves that the man who had ruled with an iron fist for 42 years was really dead.
