The ETA ceasefire even made an appearance along with the prize-winners at the prestigious Prince of Asturias Awards at Oviedo in Northern Spain.
After the laureates had received recognition for their contribution to society in the fields of science, arts, sport, literature and culture, the founder of the awards and heir to the Spanish throne Prince Felipe de Borbon began his address referring to the news from ETA.
“Yesterday we learned that those who have tormented Spanish society for so many years through terrorist violence have admitted defeat,” he said. “This is of course good news. It’s an enormous victory for our rule of law.”
Earlier, the legendary Ethiopian long distance runner Haile Gebrselassie received the sports prize, and the Canadian writer and singer Leonard Cohen the award for Letters.
