England striker Wayne Rooney will miss the group stage of Euro2012 after being handed a three match UEFA national ban.
The Manchester United front man who has had a blistering start to the season picked up the suspension after being sent off during England’s final Group G qualifier with Montengero last Friday.
UEFA’s policy is usually a one game ban with a panel deciding any further punishment on a case-by-case basis.
But European football’s governing body felt the 25-year-old’s off-ball kicking of Miodrag Dzudovic was an assault and deserved three.
England have three days to appeal the verdict once they have received the full decision in writing.
The ban has now left England manager Fabio Capello looking for alternative attacking options for the start of next year’s tournament
