German police investigate railway arson attacks

A criminal investigation has been launched into a series of arson attacks against Berlin’s railway network.

In the last few days at least seven home-made explosives have been found alongside mainline tracks around the German capital.

Two of the devices have exploded, one on Monday and one on Wednesday. Although extensive damage was caused in one case, nobody was killed or injured.

But that has not stopped Berlin’s Interior Minister Ehrhart Körting from taking a dim view:

“Whether or not you are using the term terrorism, what the perpetrators are doing is extremely dangerous and a most serious crime, no matter what you call it. We will do everything within our power and include the whole range of agencies to stop the people responsible.”

So far it is not clear who is behind the attacks. One theory is that opponents of Germany’s involvement in Afghanistan might be trying to make a point .

The authorities say they are keeping an open mind.
