European Union leaders have delayed a summit planned for next Monday by almost a week.

The postponement is to buy time to agree a crisis strategy to boost struggling banks and cope with debt-laden Greece.

The announcement comes after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed to present measures to stabilise the euro zone by the end of this month.
