French railways have been brought to a virtual standstill because staff are on strike after a colleague was stabbed eight times on an intercity service.
The guard is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, after being wounded in the arm and abdomen.
Unions have lost patience after a string of attacks on staff.
“It’s getting worse,” said one railway employee. “We’ve told management several times, saying one of our colleagues is going to end up dead, it’s that close.”
Eurostar and Thalys services are unaffected by the action, but elsewhere in France only a quarter of high speed TGV services are running.
The French rail company SNCF spent the night trying to find accommodation for stranded passengers.
A man in his thirties was arrested and an investigation into attempted murder has begun.
