Organisers of the London 2012 Olympics officially unveiled on Monday the new athletics track for the games.
The prefabricated track was laid in August with an identical warm-up track as well as an 80m sprint straight also fitted.
The first athletes to grace the lanes were local schoolchildren but better know stars were present for the occasion including world 1500 metre silver medallist Hannah England.
“I honestly think this is probably the best stadium I have been in,’‘ said England.
‘‘The track surface is really high tech. It is finished really well. I mean, we have got ten months to go and it is pretty much done. I think it is going to be really good.’‘
Although the track is now set for the Olympics the long term future of it remains uncertain as the stadium is the subject of a dispute between Premier League soccer clubs West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur, both of whom would like to take it over after the Olympics.
