Italians invade Munich's beer festival

It is Autumn in Munich and that means the annual beer festival is getting into full swing.

The so-called Oktoberfest attracts tourists from around the world but in particular it seems Italians.

To cope, the ranks of the local German police have been swelled by Italian colleagues to keep their compatriots in order.

“ Italian police have been coming here regularly for the last six years. On average 250,000 Italian tourists come to Munich and most seem to appreciate our presence,” said Police Officer Dietma Angerer.

According to Munich’s tourist office so many Italians turn up for a late holiday that the Oktoberfest’s second weekend has been dubbed “the Italian weekend”.

On the whole there is normally little trouble with everyone just wanting to lap up the party atmosphere.
