Turkey aims to write new constitution by 2012

Turkey’s parliament has reopened after the summer break, with officials promising to write up a new constitution by next year.

The rights of the minority Kurdish population are expected to feature prominently in the discussions.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul also told MPs a more liberal text based on secularism and Western democratic reform was needed.
