A video uploaded to a social media website has purportedly shown groups of people marching through the Syrian streets of Hama and Deraa in the latest protests against President Bashar al Assad’s rule.
Although euronews can’t verify the authenticity of the footage, the demonstrators appear to be showing their support for an estimated 1,0000 army defectors who are key to their campaign.
Syria’s state news agency reported that seven soldiers were killed as government forces regained control of the town of Rastan from the defectors.
A British-based Syrian support group says although communication with the town is difficult, heavy gunfire has been reported.
The United Nations says 2,700 people have been killed in the crackdown during mostly peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations since January.
