More security worries for Kenya with the news that an elderly disabled French woman has been kidnapped from her luxury tourist resort in the north of the country, near the Somali border.
Witnesses say gunmen stormed a private beach demanding ‘Where is the foreigner?’ and refused to be paid off with money before taking her through the surf to a waiting boat. Kenyan police have surrounded a vessel where they believe she is being held, and have wounded several of the captors in a gunfight.
The abduction comes three weeks after a British couple was targeted in a nearby resort. One man was killed and his wife has disappeared, presumed kidnapped. The events are ominous ones for Kenya’s tourism industry, which provides much of the country’s foreign exchange, and which has only just begun to recover after plunging following the election violence of 2007.
