Car bomb 'kills eight' in Russia's Dagestan

A car bomb in Russia’s Dagestan region has killed a policeman and seven civilians, according to the authorities and local media.

Reports say police were investigating a suspicious vehicle when it burst into flames.

The attack took place in the village of Hajjalmakhi, about 60 kilometres southwest of the provincial capital Makhachkala.

Last week several people were killed in three bomb attacks and a shooting.

The violence is blamed on an islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus, the consequence of the Chechnya war and endemic poverty.
