Amazon enters the tablet fray

Online retailer Amazon is taking on Apple in the computer tablet market with the introduction of the Kindle Fire.

On the old Kindle you could just download and read books but on the Fire model you can watch movies, TV shows, listen to music and access thousands of apps from the android app store. It does not do as much as the ipad or some other tablets but retailing at 199 dollars it is very competitively priced.

The ipad sells for just under 499 dollars.

Amazon has launched the Kindle Fire off the back of the success of their basic Kindle electronic book reader – their best-selling online product.

But in doing so they are entering an already very competitive market, with Apple taking 80 per cent of the North American market.
