In the Champions league, former Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez scored a brace to hand Bayern Munich a convincing 2-0 win over Manchester City while Napoli defeated Villareal by the same scoreline to leapfrog Roberto Mancini’s men in group A. The Bavarians, who’ll next travel to Napoli on the 18th of October, are now in the lead with 6 points.
In group B, Italian giants Inter Milan needed a late strike from Mauro Zarate to edge out CSKA Moscow 3-2 in Russia while Trabzonspor were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by French champions Lille.
Trabzonspor are still in the lead with 4 points. The Nerazzurris are 1 point adrift while Lille are currently lying in third place.
In group C, Ashley Young scored in injury time to salvage a 3-3 draw for Manchester United against FC Basel while Bruno Cesar scored in the first half to hand Benfica a narrow 1-0 win over Romanian side Galatz.
So Basel are now top of their group with 4 points, just ahead of Benfica thanks to a better goal difference. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are 2 points adrift.
And in Group D, José Mourinho’s Real Madrid thumped Ajax 3-0 at the Bernabeu while Bafetimbi Gomis and Bakary Kone both netted to hand Lyon a comfortable 2-0 win over Dynamo Zagreb at the Stade Gerland.
So los Merengues are now in the lead with 6 points, 2 ahead of Lyon who they will next face on the 18th of October in Spain.
