German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reiterated her view that Greece must stay in the eurozone and strive to repay its debts.

Merkel was speaking a joint press conference in Berlin with Greek PM George Papandreou.

“We want a strong Greece within the Eurozone. Germany is prepared to give all the help that is necessary. We think that Greece has a big responsibility to respect its obligation,” she said.

Papandreou replied:

“It is very important that messages of support come from our European partners in favour of the Greek economy. It is very important to say to our partners that Greece is going to fulfill all its obligations without any doubt.”

But Merkel warned that debt-laden nations cannot spend their way out of this economic crisis.
