UN Security Council to consider Palestinian bid

The United Nations Security Council is set to meet in New York today to start discussing the Palestinian application for full state membership.

The US has already said it will use its veto to block the bid. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is urging a return to peace talks, without preconditions.

“Why are we talking about talking? Why negotiating about negotiating? It is very simple. If you want to get to peace, put all your preconditions on the side,” he said.

Mahmoud Abbas, receiving a hero’s welcome on his return to Ramallah, has reiterated there will be no direct talks without an Israeli settlement freeze. The Palestinian President spoke out after international mediators urged the two sides to meet within a month.
