Manhattan may have been shrouded in cloud, but the happiness of the Palestinian community shone through on the streets below.
Some had hired boats to sail past the UN on the east river, while others ignored the drenching rain to dance in the streets.
Even the threat of a US security council veto did not dampen spirits. “Many countries in the world have been vetoed more than once,” said Palestinian negotiator Mohammed Shaatye. “Israel itself was vetoed three times. Jordan, Portugal, Japan and so on. So it is not the end of the world if we get an American veto.”
Israel continues to stress the need for negotiation. Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said:“Israel is going to continue to wait at the negotiating table and at that table we will settle all outstanding issues, including territories. But for that, we have to sit and talk. We have waited for two and a half years and they didn’t come, using different excuses and pretexts.”
