Government forces launch attack in Yemen

A brutal overnight attack on an opposition protest camp in Sanaa has continued into the daylight.

Witnesses have described scenes of chaos, with sniper fire coming from all directions.

Hundreds fled from the assault on the city’s so-called ‘Change Square’. Thousands have camped there for months, calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to quit power. As the anti-Saleh camp came under attack, pro-Saleh supporters held a rally in another part of the capital.

Saleh made a surprise return from Saudi Arabia earlier this week. He had been recovering there after an assassination attempt in Yemen in June.
