President Ali Abdullah Saleh is reportedly back in Yemen, after spending three months in Saudi Arabia recovering from an assassination attempt. State television has broadcast footage of his return to Sanaa.
Saleh will find his country in tense political limbo.
Fighting between pro- and anti-government forces spread through the capital Sanaa overnight, bringing the death toll of the past five days to more than 100, according to witnesses.
Negotiations on a peaceful transfer of power have stalled, due to the continuing clashes. The UN says the country will be torn apart if a solution is not agreed upon soon.
The political situation in Yemen is precarious, and that is reflected by humanitarian concerns.
There are reports of food and water shortages throughout the capital.
