Fires as Belgian binmen strike

world news

Refuse collectors in the Belgian capital set piles of rubbish on fire on Thursday during a wildcat strike to protest local government reforms.

Around half of the 600-strong team of street cleaners in Brussels took part in the walk-out. Officials plan to transfer responsibility for street cleaning in the city away from regional authorities to smaller municipalities.

The fires, which were started on major roads, left the city gridlocked.
