Middle East peace talks must be revived: Obama

world news

| |

US President Barack Obama has told the Palestinians and Israel to get back to the negotiating table and revive peace talks after a year-long deadlock.

Obama told the UN General Assembly in New York that “there is no short cut to the end of a conflict that has endured for decades.”

“Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations…ultimately it is the Israelis and the Palestinians who must reach an agreement on issues that divide them,” he said.

The Palestinians say they could take their bid for statehood to the Security Council.

But Washington, as one of the five veto-wielding permanent members, says it will block any such request.
