German directors Johannes Weiland and Uwe Heidschötter won the top award, presented in the Polish city of Sopot at a gathering of the European Cartoon Forum.

“The Little Boy and the Beast” is their short feature about a boy coming to terms with his parents divorce.

Six films were nominated, including the “Gruffalo” by Germans Jakob Schuh and Max Lang, and “Mobile” by Vanesa Fels, another German who only recently graduated from film school.

The Cartoon d’Or is the only European award for short animation features.
